1. What's the difference between a 12 kg cylinder and a 20 lb liquid propane tank?
Short answer: a 12 kg cylinder holds about 26.5 lb of propane. That's roughly one-third more than a 20 lb liquid propane tank. The names refer to fill weight, not physical volume, and they're not interchangeable.
"12 kg" and "20 lb" also point to different regional standards. A 20 lb tank is the classic barbecue cylinder in North America. A 12 kg cylinder is common in Europe, Asia, and many forklift fleets. When a supplier says "12 kg gas cylinder" and another says "20 lb liquid propane tank," convert both to the same unit before you compare.
That mistake cost us once. We approved an order of 12 kg cylinders assuming they'd replace existing 20 lb tanks. They didn't fit the storage rack. The vendor took them back, but freight and restocking ate about $500. Now I convert every spec to liters of water capacity on the same sheet. Period.
2. Are commercial LPG cylinders actually different from residential ones?
From the outside, a commercial LPG cylinder looks exactly like a residential tank. The reality is the duty rating, valve configuration, testing history, and often the buying process are different.
Commercial cylinders are expected to be moved more, dropped more, and refilled more often. That usually means a heavier-duty collar, better valve protection, and stricter inspection paperwork. On the purchasing side, commercial gas generally comes through a supply contract or a certified supplier, not a retail exchange rack. In our last procurement system review, we moved from tank swaps to on-site fills with three owned commercial cylinders — the contract was structured for that, but the cylinders were the same physical size as a 20 lb tank.
So don't assume "commercial" means "bigger." It can mean more robust and more documentation. That difference is part of the total cost.
3. Is a new composite gas cylinder worth the higher upfront price?
When we first got a quote for a new composite gas cylinder, I almost deleted the email. $168 for a composite 12 kg cylinder vs $68 for a steel one? No thank you. But after running the numbers over ten years, the composite was closer than I expected.

"Empty gas container" can mean two things: a disposable one-shot cylinder, or a refillable cylinder you own. I'm talking about the refillable kind. You buy the empty container once, then pay for the gas on each fill.
For our volume, buying 20 empty gas containers made sense. We compared exchange services vs owned containers over two years. Exchange is easier, but you're renting the steel forever. With our usage, the owned containers paid back in about 14 months, before the exchange fees.
Just don't buy the cheapest empty cylinder you find. A used cylinder with an expired hydrotest can cost more than a new one after inspection and a valve replacement. We bought a "great deal" batch once — the test dates were six years old. Recertification plus new valves came to $1,200 total. That was the expensive lesson. Once.
5. Why did my 12 kg gas cylinder quote jump between suppliers?
What I mean is that the top-line price of a 12 kg gas cylinder is almost never the actual cost. In November 2024 I compared four suppliers for a recurring refill contract. Supplier A quoted $11,920. Supplier B quoted $12,800. A looked better until I added line items: fuel surcharge, cylinder inspection fee, hazmat paperwork, and a monthly minimum. Supplier B charged more per fill but included pickup, certified scales, and valve seals. The total cost of ownership difference was 11% in B's favor.
That's why our procurement policy now requires all vendors to itemize one-time and recurring charges in writing. No written breakdown, no PO. If they won't tell you where the surcharges live, that's a red flag.
6. Should I buy new or refurbished steel cylinders?
Refurbished steel can be a smart cost move if you verify three things: the last hydrotest date, the valve condition, and the certification paperwork. A fully refurbished 12 kg cylinder might be $45–$60; a new one might be $65–$90. If the refurbished unit has a fresh test and a new valve, we'll buy it. If not, the savings disappear.
This is where I see old assumptions break down. A lot of buyers assume new is always safer. The fundamentals haven't changed — steel with a valid test mark is safe — but the execution has transformed. Modern test records are often digital, and some suppliers send you the certification file before delivery. That makes buying refurbished less risky than it was in 2015.
If a seller has no records at all, avoid it. We only consider refurbished cylinders with a stamp and paperwork dated within the last 12 months. Simple.
7. What should I do with old or expired commercial LPG cylinders?
Don't leave expired commercial LPG cylinders sitting in the yard. We had three steel cylinders that were out of test and not worth recertifying. Our propane supplier purged them and took them for a $20-per-cylinder hazmat fee. That's not free, but leaving them around is worse — a rusted valve can leak, and an "empty" tank with no paperwork is still a liability in an audit.
As of early 2025, our policy is to schedule disposal the same quarter a cylinder fails inspection. It costs a little money upfront, but it avoids the hidden cost of a yard audit or a surprise leak. Treat expired cylinders as a line item on your cost list, not a souvenir. That's it.
