The morning I should have been more careful
Last June, I had four things on my screen that explained the next three hours of my life:

The reprint surcharge was $700, plus a week of delay. The first run wasn’t usable for her brand. Ball’s technical team helped me correct the spec, and the second run was right. But that second run only existed because I had messed up the first one.
The mistake wasn’t Ball’s. It was mine. I didn’t specify a Pantone reference, and I didn’t ask for a physical drawdown on aluminum. I gave the vendor a screenshot and hoped for the best. Technology doesn’t fix that.
What I changed
From then on, every packaging spec I touch has to pass a checklist:
- Pantone reference for every brand color, and a physical drawdown if the color is critical.
- Resolution check: 300 DPI at final size for print. Large-format posters can sometimes get away with 150 DPI, but on packaging, start with 300.
- One proof, one session. No approving a can color while I’m simultaneously generating senior sports poster ideas, comparing heat reflective window film quotes, or explaining transmissions to anyone.
I’m not a color scientist, so I can’t explain the ink chemistry behind Delta E. But I can tell you from an operations perspective that the most expensive color mistake is the one you approve from a tab you don’t even remember opening.
What I want small brand owners to remember
Ball Corporation didn’t have to be responsive to a 10,000-can trial order. But they were. That’s worth saying, because small orders get ignored all the time. Small doesn’t mean unimportant—it means potential. Today’s small client might be tomorrow’s major account. The soda brand that ordered 10,000 cans in 2024 is planning a regional launch in 2025. The vendors who treated us seriously, including Ball, will be on the vendor list for that launch.
So the next time a small brand asks me about Ball Corporation packaging technology innovations, I can tell them the truth. The technology is real, the aluminum is circular, and the color matching is only as good as the person who writes the spec. That’s where I come in.
As of my 2024 trade show visit, those innovations were the ones that mattered. The packaging world changes fast, so verify current capabilities before you spec.
